No wonder the gods positioned themselves here. The Greek islands are the most beautiful places I have ever seen, with the sun shining everyday and every corner you turn there is another stunning view.
Now,the travelling from one Greek island to another is for mere mortals and not gods, I'm sure they had a much more advanced way of getting around. Patience & a laid back attitude will be needed.
The ferry system is the most popular and perhaps the most romanticized way of getting around Greece.
Check out www.greeka.com click on right side Ad "on-line ferry tickets" for schedules.
If travelling during the shoulder season you can usually get away with buying the tickets the day of departure, with one exception if travelling to Santorini we would advise you to buy your tickets ahead of time. Its is one of the most popular islands in Greece.
We would recommend you take the larger ferries when given the choice they are easier to board, plenty of space to move around and you can sit outside on the deck, and take advantage of the beautiful views leaving and arriving the ports, but be aware there is smoking allowed on the outside deck and it seems everyone in Europe smokes.
The ferry tickets are regulated by government so prices do not vary from one vendor to another.
The faster boats (flying cats) are often not on schedule, so you do not end up saving that much time but, we felt you sacrificed comfort as your not allowed to move around, the seating is very much like that of a plane and more difficult to board, with not much room for luggage. The fares tend to be higher as well.
Flying, we suggest you look at this option, it was much faster to fly from Crete to Athens than to take a ferry. The flying time was just under an hour with the whole trip taking about three hours for 100 euros for two people.
Book early and you will receive the best fare from the larger airlines
At time of writing this article seats were available in September 2010 with Aegean air for 84 Euros/ 2people
Most ferries will be priced at that point if not more.
